Our 9:38 Apprenticeship Scheme

When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." (Matthew 9:36-38, NIV)

Why spend money on an Apprentice?
This is first and foremost a decision to encourage Gospel work - to encourage the sharing of the Good News about salvation through faith in Jesus Christ alone. An Apprentice would seek to do that in his or her work, help us to do it all that's going on, and receive vital training that might set them on the course to a life-time of full time Gospel work. The need for such workers is vast if we are to make an impact on our increasingly secular world.
Secondly this is a decision to encourage Christian growth and service. We would be making an investment in a person for the good of the whole Church of Christ, not just ourselves. Yes, after one or two years the person will leave to go elsewhere, with all the experience we would hope to have given them. A loss? No - a great gain to God's church.
So thirdly this is a decision to "store up our treasures in heaven" (Matthew 6:19-20) - that is, to invest our effort, time, and money in something that has Gospel consequences, not material gain. We won't get for our money a piece of furniture, a decoration, a musical instrument, or a piece of office equipment. It costs more than all of those (approx £14000 a year, for 2007-8 this is 70% funded by the Yule trust). But we pray that God will use this opportunity to his glory, in increasing Gospel work, Christian growth and service.
